McCarthy Named Championship Manager Of Month

Mick McCarthy has been recognised for Wolves’ great start to the season by being named the winner of August’s Championship Manager of the Month award.

Alan Irvine of Preston, Birmingham's Alex McLeish and Bristol City chief Gary Johnson were all in contention for the first managerial award of the new campaign.

But his team’s impressive start swung it for McCarthy.

Wolves were held to a 2-2 draw by Plymouth Argyle on opening day, but have won all three subsequent games and currently sit top of the table.

Wolves have also rattled in nine goals in two matches at Molineux, leaving McCarthy delighted that his side have now acquired an incisive cutting edge.

"Last season we dominated games but didn't win them. We've started scoring goals and that is the most pleasing aspect," McCarthy told Sky Sports News.

"We've had a good start and had some convincing wins.

"We're not getting carried away but it's nice to be top of the league with a two-week break.

"It is difficult to assess the squad. It is a young team but they have got experience as well and they are a little bit wiser than they were last season."
