Ballack To Miss German Qualifiers

The 31-year-old Chelsea midfielder suffered a bruised foot against Portsmouth on the opening day of the season, and has been unable to regain full fitness since the incident.

Despite featuring in the Premier League since then, with the help of medication and rest, Ballack missed Germany's last friendly match against Belgium amid concerns about his condition.

After he played in Chelsea's victory over Wigan last week, it transpired that a relapse of the injury had been suffered.

The DFB have revealed that they hoped that Ballack would have shaken off his knock in time for the Helsinki showdown next week, but it has emerged that the ex-Bayer Leverkusen enforcer will have to sit out the pair of matches.

Ballack told Channel 2: "The original diagnosis of the Chelsea doctor has been confirmed. It means that I will be out for at least two weeks."
