Lippi Calls Curci To Replace Amelia

Amelia was diagnosed with a slipped disc in his back and he was forced to leave the Azzurri’s coverciano training camp.

Lippi has now called upon the former Roma shot-stopper in order to fill in and deputise for the Palermo goalkeeper. Therefore Gianluigi Buffon, Morgan De Sanctis and Curci will all be ready for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Curci joined Siena from Roma this summer in a co-ownership deal as the 23-year-old was finding it hard to break into Luciano Spalletti’s first team but Lippi believes he is still good enough to warrant the nod for the national team.

The Azzurri will take on Cyprus on September 6th and then Georgia on the 10th. They are in group 8 of the World Cup 2010 European qualifying stages alongside the Republic of Ireland, Montenegro, Bulgaria as well as the aforementioned two.

Lippi will be hoping his side get off to the perfect start against the Cypriots as La Nazionale have not been too convincing since the coach’s return to the helm in June.

On a more positive note, Alberto Gilardino has been impressive in training this week and he is likely to start ahead of Luca Toni on Saturday.
