Spanish Radio Brands Calderón A Habitual Liar

José Antonio Abellán, presenter of the football show 'El Tirachinas' (meaning 'The Catapult') , apparently took issue with Ramón Calderón's sale of Robinho to Manchester City. Thus the Madrid-born radio personality decided to list some of the president's other contradictions.

Among these were:

Real Madrid's television contract with Mediapro. Sport.es recounts that, on November 15 2006, the president said that Madrid would receive €800m over seven years. Two days later this figure had become a record-breaking €1bn. nother two days later, it was €1.1bn. (N.B. Whether or not this is actually a 'contradiction' is one for the accountants; certainly more than one mainstream source actually said that the €1.1bn figure was accurate.)
Kaká. In the manner so beloved of presidential hopefuls everywhere, Calderón ran for office in 2006 on a platform broadly rotating around the signing of Brazilian midfielder Kaká. Observant bystanders will note that Ricardo still plays for AC Milan, and not Real Madrid. Said Calderón at the time: "I don't intend to win these elections by 'any means necessary'... in my lifetime I've always been one who fulfills his commitments, and the voters know that."
Cristiano Ronaldo. Markedly similar to the Kaká incident.
Roberto Carlos. Much like the current case of Robinho, all indications from the presidential office pointed to the Brazilian remaining at the Bernabéu. Instead R.C. was off to Turkey in double-quick time; ditto Robinho for Manchester City.
Some of the president's defenders may respond by stating that in the world of football players nothing can be set in stone; his detractors will delight in poring through the archives for other 'Calderónisms.'
