Blatter To Finally Hand Italy World Cup Recognition
Blatter is not the most popular figure in the peninsula, and has always largely been viewed by the public as being somewhat anti-Italian with regards to footballing matters.
The opposition to Blatter hit fever pitch at the 2006 World Cup, when the President neglected his duty and refused to present the trophy to the Azzurri after they had defeated France in the final in Berlin. Instead Vice President Lennart Johansson handed over the Cup to captain Fabio Cannavaro.
No explanation has ever been given as to the reason for this snub, but nevertheless more than two years later Blatter is expected to arrive in Italy to hand them a World Cup winning privilege.
Blatter will be in Coverciano today to officially deliver their World Cup-winning badges, which will be affixed to every shirt, starting from their opening 2010 qualifier against Cyprus this Saturday.
Blatter will be received by the FIGC president Giancarlo Abete, and also in attendance at the ceremony will be Giovanni Petrucci, together with the senior management of Italian football.
