Mutu signed for Chelsea from Parma in 2003 for €22.4m, but was sacked by the Londoners a year later after he tested positive for cocaine.
The Romanian then resumed his career after a seventh month ban, signing for Juventus on a free transfer. He then joined Fiorentina in the summer of 2006 where he has since rediscovered his best form.
FIFA last month ordered Mutu to pay Chelsea €17m to compensate revenue losses suffered by the Premiership club as a result of his ban.
Mutu immediately described the punishment as “an inhumane and unjust punishment,” adding, “I don't think I did something so terrible as to warrant this kind of punishment. For this reason, I believe we will appeal.”
The player has now indeed filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
A CAS statement read: “Mutu requests the CAS to annul the Fifa decision and to establish that no compensation is in fact due.”
