Two Dead As Marseille Supporters' Bus Crashes
At approximately 07:45 CET a coach load of Marseille supporters were involved in an accident on the A6 motorway near Fontainebleau, a town around 30 miles south-east of Paris. An assessment carried out by the police revealed that two supporters were left dead and five seriously injured. Another 15 had minor injuries.Sporting director José Anigo has been quoted by La Provence as saying, “The club is very shocked by the bus accident that has caused the death of two Marseille supporters.”In such circumstance, Marseille are, understandably, attempting to postpone the fixture. “We are all in a state of shock,” Anigo continued, “If we play then we will wear black armbands without asking for authorisation. The real question is will Olympique Marseille be playing this evening? Pape Diouf, the Olympique president, will speak to Frédéric Thiriez, the president of the LFP.”The supporters of Marseille are known as some of the most passionate in Ligue 1. After only one round of games, the club leads the Championnat des France Tribunes, a league table to judge the best supported side in the country. Judgements are based upon the atmosphere the crowd creates as well as behaviour.Marseille’s match was due to kick-off in Normandy at 19:00 but now seems likely to be played at a later date.
