CARSON, Calif. (AP) -- John Thorrington scored in the 65th minute to give the Chicago Fire a 1-0 victory and spoil coach Bruce Arena's debut with the Los Angeles Galaxy on Thursday night.
The Fire (10-6-5) moved into second place in the Eastern Conference, one point behind New England. The Galaxy (6-9-6) extended their losing streak to nine games, one less than the team record set in 2006.
Arena, who won two MLS Cups with D.C. United and guided the United States in the previous two World Cups, was announced as head coach and general manager on Monday. Fans greeted him with applause before the match.
Thorrington scored his fifth goal of the season after a give-and-go with Brian McBride, who made his first start for the Fire since being acquired from Toronto on July 30.
Thorrington received McBride's return pass, dribbled and took a 23-yard shot between two defenders that landed between diving goalkeeper Steve Cronin and the right post.
McBride's assist was his first in Major League Soccer since 2003. He spent the past five seasons playing in England.
Goalkeeper Jon Busch made five saves for his league-leading ninth shutout, one less than his career best.
The Galaxy played without David Beckham and Landon Donovan, who competed overseas for England and the United States, respectively. Donovan leads MLS with 14 goals.
The Fire's Cuauhtemoc Blanco and Gonzalo Segares also missed the game after playing for Mexico and Costa Rica, respectively, in World Cup qualifying Wednesday night.
Los Angeles signed midfielder Eddie Lewis before the game. Lewis, who did not play, spent nine seasons in England and competed in two World Cups for the United States
