Villarreal crashed to their fourth successive friendly defeat when they went down 0-1 at home to Udinese and ended the match with just ten men.
The Italians were well prepared for the match with La Liga's 2007/08 runners-up and Pasquale Marino's men gave a good account of themselves, playing well throughout the entire match.
The best chance of the first half fell to Quagliarella, however he missed an opportunity to put his side ahead with only the goalkeeper to beat as the first half finished scoreless.
The second half was livelier, as both teams searched for an opener, but neither the Zebrette nor the Yellow Submarines were able to find the back of the net immediately after the restart. However, on 63 minutes, Quagliarella made up for his earlier error by giving his side the lead, connecting with Antonio Di Natale’s cross from the left.
The rest of the match featured few goal-scoring chances, but Villarreal finished the match with ten men when Cani was sent off.
Marino will be happy with the performance, as Udinese have not had a successful preseason thus far. They open the 2008/09 Serie A schedule with an early Saturday match against Palermo. Meanwhile, Villarreal coach Manuel Pellegrini would have expected a better result from his free-falling men against an Udinese side who finished 7th in Serie A last season.
