Samp Ready For Inter?

Most teams would have preferred a more relaxed start to the 2008/2009 Serie A campaign, but Sampdoria have been handed an opener against the current champions. The Blucerchiati get the season underway on Saturday night at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris in front of a packed home crowd. Both teams go into this match in good condition, with Inter mentally strengthened after capturing the Italian Supercup title against rivals Roma on the weekend. Sampdoria has had an impressive pre-season and their transfer campaign will have give the Blucerchiati faithful a boost for the year ahead. The defence looks solid, boasting a back line of experienced and trustworthy players that have kept numerous clean sheets during the summer. The only real worry at the back is goalkeeper Antonio Mirante. After a shaky start to pre-season, a terrible slip-up in the game against Sporting Lisbon has eaten into the player's confidence. This will surely return with time.Going ForwardThe midfield looks strong, with Angelo Palombo pulling the strings, complimented by the talents of Gennaro Delvecchio, Paolo Sammarco, Daniele Dessena and Daniele Franceschini. The youth and determination in this midfield combination will be an interesting one to watch. Up front, Sampdoria have the highly-rated Antonio Cassano, already showing flashes of his brilliance during summer matches. However, the rest of the front-line has not impressed as much as 'Il Talentino'. Poacher Emiliano Bonazzoli may be asked to play out of position, and not for the first time. Uruguayan recruite Bruno Fornaroli has also struggled since his arrival, complaining of muscular pain and only featuring for short periods of the pre-season matches. All in all, the Blucerchiati have a team that could surprise a few of the top teams and impress on the European stage this season. With 4000 tickets sold on the opening day of sales alone, a full house will welcome both sets of teams with the hope that a good start will help to sustain charges for the Scudetto and European qualification.
