Mallorca Edge Girona On Penalties

Mallorca continued with their strong pre-season showing in preparation for the new campaign as they clinched the Trofeo Costa Brava, despite having to rely on the penalty shoot-out to beat little known Girona FC.
The Balearic Islanders have only lost twice so far in nine warm-up friendlies – one of which was on penalties to PSV Eindhoven – and they completed their pre-season program at Girona on Friday on a winning note.
The hosts, newly promoted to the Segunda División for the upcoming term, went infront just before the break when Gabri capitalized on a defensive error from Mallorca’s Ramis to set up Jito for the opener.
Both sides made a total of eight changes for the second half and the game immediately lost its shape and rhythm. But Mallorca drew levelled in the 63rd minute through David Navarro when he, too, capitalized on some shoddy defending to send the game into penalties.
Gregorio Manzano’s side converted five out of their seven spot kicks while the Catalans only managed four.
